All babies born in Southwest Finland are delivered at our department. We also perform elective caesarean sections, labour inductions and late-pregnancy follow-ups. Our post-delivery recovery room is designed for the entire family: The newborn can be in skin to skin contact with the mother and the entire family can enjoy meeting the newcomer immediately after the caesarean section. About 4,000 children are born in our department every year.We focus on each family’s individual needs and work in a family-oriented manner. Our way of working follows the WHO's BFHI (baby-friendly hospital initiative) principles. At the Labour ward the mother and child are well taken care of by our midwives. An obstetrician, an anaesthetist and a paediatrician are immediately available if needed. Maternity emergnecy services are available 24/7. For students Training, teaching and guidance Our ward is located in the university hospital. We take care of high and low-risk deliveries. As a student and a member of a multidisciplinary team you have the opportunity to participate in many deliveries and encounter numerous different situations. Before your training period We work in three shifts and we expect that in beginning you plan your shifts in accordance with the shifts of your mentor. It is our wish that you have passed your theoretical studies related to labour nursing before your start your training period with us. After the delivery you and your baby will be transferred to the ward for families and newborns. See the instructions for visiting the ward for families and newborns on the ward's page. Facilities All delivery rooms are single rooms. The newborn is cared for in the same room. All delivery rooms have a shower and toilet. There are three tubs in the department. The tubs are located between the delivery rooms so that a tub can be accessed from six delivery rooms. Caesarean sections are performed in an operating room located in the Labour ward. The spouse or birthing partner may participate in a caesarean delivery. We share a break room with the pregnancy follow-up ward where the spouse and birthing partner may rest and enjoy some food and drink.
