The ward provides care for women who have given birth vaginally or by caesarean section and their newborns. We work according to the WHO's baby friendly hospital initiative (BFHI) program. We monitor the wellbeing of the mother and her child and support recovery from childbirth, breastfeeding and the interactions between the child and its parents as holistically as possible. Our clients come to us from the labour ward after having given birth. We receive also patients (mothers and their babies) who have been discharged previously but who still need specialized care. Client fees The fee depends on the type of visit: you will be charged a daily inpatient fee, a clinic fee, a day surgical fee or a continuing treatment fee. More information about client fees. For students Training, teaching and guidance Our ward provides an opportunity to learn the principles of nursing of newborns and women after childbirth. We provide care to women with high-risk and low-risk pregnancies, and their families. As a student, you will gain experience in patient guidance, especially guidance in supporting breastfeeding and parenthood. As your training progresses, you will gradually be able to act independently of your mentor but with her/his support. Before your training period We work in three shifts and we expect you to plan your shifts in accordance with the shifts of your mentor. The ability to work on the ward requires knowledge of female physiology, neonatal care and breast feeding. Read the web page The hospital as a learning environment. What will you learn? Monitoring and nursing of women after delivery and of their newborn Breast feeding guidance Supporting parenthood Facing families under various life circumstances Wide, multidisciplinary collaboration Student contacts Anne Kujanpää, Ida Qvarnström and Salla Raita. E-mail addresses have the form [email protected] Facilities The ward for families and newborns is located on the 8th floor of the Lighthouse hospital and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is located on the 3rd floor. The ward for families and newborns is a rooming-in ward with rooms for one or two mother-infant pairs. Practically all rooms can be changed into family rooms, if needed. After childbirth, you may ask if free family rooms are available at the maternity ward. Family rooms are available for couples, if your spouse can be with you and help round-the-clock. Siblings cannot be accommodated in family rooms. The spouse also pays a daily hospital fee for each beginning day (24-hour-period). The spouse and the mother are served daily meals. A refrigerator is available in the day room of the ward for your own snacks, if needed. We recommend that the spouse brings along a loose shirt that can be buttoned or zipped up to the maternity ward. This will make it easier to follow the baby during skin-to-skin contact. There are lockable cupboards available for your personal items, but space is limited. It’s best if you take your own toiletries along with you to the hospital. You may use your own clothes, if you like. We also recommend that your take your own indoor slippers with you to the ward. Visits The spouse/support person and the baby’s siblings are welcome to visit at any time between 8 am and 8 pm. The visiting time for the grandparents is between 6 and 7 pm. Changes in visiting hours and rules are possible due to the contagious disease situation (corona, RS virus and other).
