Most of our surgery focuses on operations on the retina, cornea, tear ducts and eye lids. Other common procedures are cataract surgery and surgery to correct for squinting (strabismus surgery) and high eye pressure (glaucoma surgery). Day surgery is surgical treatment that has been planned in advance. The patient is registered in the hospital and discharged on the same day. Depending on the type of intervention and the referral, the patient may either need a visit for preparatory examinations or arrive directly from home for the procedure. We are part of Operational Division of Surgery and Cancer Diseases> Facilities The unit for ophthalmological day surgery is located on the 3rd floor of the A-hospital, in association with the ophthalmological open care unit. There are 5 beds and several seats reserved for patients attending the day surgery unit. Cupboards with locks for storing patients’ belongings are at the disposal of the patients. Discharge Before discharge from the hospital you will get all instructions you need at home. At the same time the required control visits will be booked. The number of control visits and their timing depends on your condition and personal needs. If you have agreed to have your control visit after treatment at the Unit of day surgery at some other hospital (depending on where you live), please contact that hospital. Client fees The cost of surgery is included in the cost for treatment at the unit of day surgery. For other visits, an open-care visit cost will be charged. See client fees. Day surgery is a form of care that is planned in advance – the patient is registered in the hospital in the morning of day when the surgical procedure is made and is usually discharged on the same day, the patient’s condition allowing. Depending on the procedure, the patient will be either is a sitting or lying position. In the Unit of day surgery you will learn the nursing practices related to surgery of patients with cataract, glaucoma and squint, how patients with implants inside the eye are treated and the practices related to laser treatment of the eye and to diseases of the retina, cornea and eye lids. You will learn what the preliminary examinations of cataract patients consist of, how the operating room functions and how the open care unit of patients with eye or visual problems functions. Tutoring You will have one or two tutors during your practice period. The tutor(s) plan(s), together with you, your period of practical vocational training. The tutor participates in the assessment of how you have reached your intermediate and final learning goals. The tutor will also help you to formalize your goals and follows your progress. Before starting your vocational training period you are asked to contact the unit where you will do the training to agree on the schedule for your first training day and on other practical matters. You may plan your working hours and visits to familiarize yourself with the various units of the Department of Ophthalmology together with your tutor. We wish that you yourself keep a “diary” to follow your progress and your daily goals.
