Modern facilities and quality of care Our unit has 14 modern operating rooms, including a so-called hybrid theatre that enables combining less invasive radiological techniques with open surgery. There are also plans to acquire a surgical robot for one of the theatres. Our anaesthesiologists also provide general anaesthesia and procedural sedation services outside our unit for procedures such as angioradiological occlusion of cerebral aneurysms, mini-invasive cardiac valve implantation and imaging-guided biopsies. To serve the needs of operating services we have a recovery unit for up to 19 patients. Approximately 1000 small procedures are performed there in annually in addition to monitoring patients after their surgeries. These procedures include the insertion of various types of venous and pain management catheters and the insertion of pleural and spinal drains. Patients can also be prepared for surgery in the recovery room: critically ill patients can be stabilised, various catheters and cannulas inserted and nerve blocks performed. Our staff is a highly trained, interprofessional group of about 170 professionals. Every operating room team includes one or more surgeons, a minimum of one anaesthesiologist, a team of at least three nurses and a medical technician. The administration staff, pharmacists, logisticians, the IT team, the institutional cleaning team, equipment maintenance assistants and perfusion technicians also play a vital role in our daily work.
