The stem cell transplantation unit at the Tyks University Hospital is one of the two national stem cell transplantation units in Finland where complicated allogeneic stem cell transplantations are carried out with stem cells collected from healthy, unrelated donors to manage patients with difficult-to-treat haematological conditions. We perform more than 100 stem cell transplantations each year. At European level we are categorized as medium-sized transplant center. We were the first in Finland to perform a stem cell transplantation with peripheral blood stem cells. For this, we had refined the technique of collecting peripheral blood stem cells by apheresis (stem cell apheresis). Our center was also the first in Finland to perform haploidentical stem cell transplantation, in which a healthy first-degree relative can serve as a donor.

The Tyks Cancer Centre arranges cancer treatment and research in Southwest Finland. Our responsibility areas are prevention, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation, advanced scientific research and education in the field of cancer on the level of specialized medical care. We are actively researching the implementation and effectiveness of the Close Collaboration with Parents intervention through several evaluation studies in Finland, Estonia and ongoing studies in other countries.

The Turku University Hospital Centre of Excellence in Neuromodulation Therapies implements, coordinates and develops neuromodulation operations and scientific research in Southwest Finland in several fields of specialised medical care.

The operations of the Centre of Excellence in Infections and Microbes includes, for example, laboratory and high security laboratory operations, contingency planning and scientific research.

We conduct extensive research in various fields of obstetrics and gynaecology. We also conduct lots of study on nursing work.

The Cancer Centre brings research much closer to the patient. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for any patient to participate in ongoing cancer trials. Research pervades each step along the treatment path.
